Under the new General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), which will come into force on 25 May 2018, individuals will benefit from heightened rights in terms of their ability to request and access personal data from any entities holding such data about them. All of the rights from the current Data Protection Act 1998 (“DPA”) will remain in place. Other rights, however, are novel or enhanced to react to the developments in the digital age. For example, if an individual makes their request electronically, an organisation should provide the information in an electronic format.
